HOW TO DEAL WITH UNCERTAINTY

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST

How to deal with uncertainty

In this episode Danielle chats to She Will Shine Member Conny Weyrich about how to deal with uncertainty during a pandemic.

Conny is a Masters qualified Art Therapist and Creative Coach at Sensemaking Space and shares her insights on why we are feeling increasingly anxious and fearful.

Conny shares how resilience will help us navigate these difficult times as well as body and mind techniques that will help ground us, and regulate our window of tolerance.

We also discuss the importance of being transparent in our relationships to calm our nervous system. And that by reaching out without expectation, but solely to be heard and seen, will help us.

Proudly presented by Danielle Price, Founder of She Will Shine.

Exercise 1:

I am having the thought that…
Thoughts are not facts and we can practice to distance ourselves from unhelpful thoughts that become overwhelming and interfere with our everyday lives. We need to remember that our brain continuously produces thoughts, we can’t control this.

When you notice a thought that is unhelpful, stresses or worries you, replay that thought in your mind by adding “I am having the thought that…” in front of it. In most cases it creates a bit of distance, enough distance to consider that our thought might actually not be true, and therefore it loses some of its power over us.

Example:
Your thought is:
A friend hasn’t checked in with me for days now. They don’t care about me.

Try:
I am having the thought that they don’t care about me.

Exercise 2:

54321. An exercise to orient yourself in your environment, engage your senses, and focus on the present moment.

Look around and…

  • Look for 5 things you can see
  • Become aware of 4 things you can touch
  • Acknowledge 3 things you can hear
  • Notice 2 things you can smell
  • Become aware of 1 thing you can taste

Name each of the things you can see, touch, hear, smell, taste.

Repeat the five steps until you get a sense of feeling calmer.

This can also be practiced with another person, e.g. with your child.
